2008 Vintage Update

For Cloud 9, our first vintage of Walker Vineyard Zinfandel (Amador County) has just exited a "funky stage" in the barrel and is blossoming into what we are expecting from  probably the most acclaimed Zinfandel in the Sierra Foothills (often garnering 90+ ratings from Robert Parker).  With Winemaker Nancy Steel already recognized as a Zinfandel specialist, we're anticipating this to be one of the best Cloud 9 wines yet.

When we tasted the first vintage of Cloud 9 Syrah from Baby Rattlesnake Vineyard (El Dorado County), many of us proudly proclaimed it to be the best Syrah we'd ever tasted.  That is, until we tasted the 2008!  As with the 2006, a portion of the 2008 was crushed via "Methode Ancienne" (stomped with our feet) and - at this early stage - may even one-up the vaunted 2006.

Garsa Sonya 2008 continues the Portuguese varietal personna started in 2007.  In 2008, however, we have some Souzao to add to the Tinta Madeira and Touriga Nacional that comprised the 2007 vintage bottling.  Souzao offers more of a fruit component to complement the spice of the Touriga and the Tinta Madeira.  The 2008 is very close to the original vision we had for this wine.

Brand Updates:

Cloud 9: The 2004 Composition is all but gone; the 2006 is developing nicely in the cellar (but is in no hurry to awaken from its maturing slumber).  More than half of the Composition Reserve has been sold in just a few months.  This "only-once-in-our-history" bottling really does separate itself from its superb brethren in more ways than its individually-numbered bottles.

Seity Zinfandel 2006 is drinking at its peak right now and is one of the fastest moving items in both tasting rooms. We are down to our last few cases of this wine and we anticipate we will be out of stock before the 2008 Walker Zinfandel is ready to release, so it would be wise to stock your cellar now.

Cloud 9 Syrah is getting better and better every weekend.  Given the fact that this wine is better the second day after opening than it is the first, the promise of this wine's developing additional character in the bottle for several years seems justified. It continues to be one of the most distinctive Syrahs any of us have ever tasted.

Garsa: Our three spring 2010 releases are selling well.  They are a 2007 Barbera, a 2007 Tempranillo, and our 2008 Roussanne.  The Barbera is from Wild Burro Vineyard in Amador and is almost gone.  It will likely be sold out by the end of June.  Normally a component in Composition, we bottled just a few cases as a stand-alone varietal largely for our Wine Club, with a few cases left for the general public.  The 2007 is our third vintage of Rolleri (Calaveras County) Tempranillo and is a little more structured and fuller-bodied than past vintages, but still retains the blueberry fruit notes that characterizes this vineyard.  As we have completed a second bottling of 2007 Tempranillo, we should have adequate inventory to last the summer.  No so with our second vintage of Amador Roussanne (BellaGrace Vineyard): we have fewer than 35 cases left.  It is even better than our original offering as it adds a citrus (grapefruit) note to the luscious honeysuckle fruit of this grape.

Muse:  We're now  preparing for our FIFTH bottling of Carnivale and there is no sign of its popularity diminishing.  The new 2009 Genie is in the bottle -and int the tasting rooms - and is distinguised by the fact that it is the first vintage in which we've subsituted Riesling for the Muscat Canelli of past vintages.  The most recent bottling of Mingle is also essentially out of stock, but the few cases that remain are available in the tasting room (although it is no longer being included as part of the tasting menu).  Blendmeister Rich Boone still feels that the current Mingle comes closest to the Solomon vision of what Mingle should be.
